Events and Festivals in Thailand

A visit to Thailand is always exciting, but there are certain times of the year when a visit or holiday to Thailand may be even more thrilling. There are many exciting festivals and events that take place annually in the country determined by the lunar calendar that many Asian countries follow. Therefore, if you are planning a holiday to the exotic country you may want to explore nearby festival times to enjoy an even more exotic trip.

In January both the River of Kings Festival and the Chiang Mai Winter Fair take place. The Fair may not be the most sophisticated event, but is a great time to see local Thai beauty pageants and boxing competitions as well as experience the music of the country. The Kings Festival on the other hand is bright sound and light festival that features a large production involving over 700 actors and actresses in the case as the history of Thailand is acted out on stage.

In February are the Chiang Mai Flower Festival and the Bangkok China Town Festival. The flower festival is the smaller of the two and a celebration of flowers with parade floats and plenty of flower displays and handicraft sales. The Bangkok China Town Festival on the other hand takes place in the ‘Chinatown’ of the city and celebrates the Chinese New Year with lanterns, flowers, a parade, and plenty of Chinese food and cultural events.

In April is the celebration of the Thai New Year as the Songkran Festival Nationwide when local people pay homage to Buddha and an open water festival takes place. The festival often involves plenty of water warfare and is best experienced in the areas of Bangkok, Khao San Road, and Chiang Mai. This is possibly the most fun festival to see and the most well known Thailand festival.

Those who want to grab some great sales items will want to be in Thailand in June during the Thailand Grand Sales. Many hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls participate in the sales offering discount prices and plenty of everything to purchase such as sports products, accessories, clothes, Thai silks, Thai handicrafts, textiles, and plenty of other options.

Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the Phichit Boat Races which take place in September as the Phichit regatta roles down the Nan River. Following in October is the Chon Buri Buffalo Races, which feature buffalos in races and various contests that place the massive strength of the buffalo against men. In addition, in December the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta takes place around the island and involves top sailing experts from around the world. Interestingly enough instead of heading down a river the boats head around the island waters.
