Overview of Miami

The city of Miami is just one of many municipalities that are located within Miami Dade County and the most famous one. However, the entire Miami Dade County area is often referred to as simply Miami.

Miami stretches east to west from the Atlantic Ocean, to the edge of Everglades National Park, about thirty miles. From north to south, it stretches from the border of Broward County to the border of Monroe County, and this distance is approximately forty miles.

Miami, because of its location, is the country’s gateway to South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. In addition, the city is literally visited by millions of tourists from Europe each year.

Jackie Gleason was a very famous comedian back in the 1950’s and 1960’s who filmed his TV show on Miami Beach. At the end of each show, he would say he loved Miami and called it the “Sun and Fun Capital of the World”, which later became the city’s nickname.

The land the city is built on has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, but it was not really until after World War II that the area began to explode. At that time a style of building was very popular called “Art Deco”, and many of Miami Beach’s hotels were built using this type of construction.

These hotels boomed in the 1950’s and 1960’s, but later became run down, and were inhabited by mostly retired folks in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. In the late 1980’s, the world took notice of these irreplaceable structures, and investors flocked into buy and renovate them.

The art deco district on Miami Beach has some of the toughest building regulations in the world, when it comes to these structures. Essentially, each and every thing that is done to them, must be first approved by a specially created art deco design committee, and even changing the tiniest bit of the artistic design or unique construction, is frowned upon.

The renovation of these hotels is what started Miami’s resurgence as a tourist destination, that continues to this day. In the 1980’s Miami undertook a massive beach restoration program that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and the city now has some of the finest beaches in the world.

Another huge industry also developed because of the Art Deco district, which was the fashion industry. Miami, besides being a world class resort, also has some of the finest sunlight in the world for photographers to shoot outdoor pictures with.

In addition, the city offers almost any kind of background an advertising campaign or a magazine cover could desire. The modeling industry noticed this, and every major agency has an office in the city, and thousands of photo shoots take place there each year.

Miami’s population is one of the most diverse in the world. It is possible to walk down Miami Beach where many of the restaurants have outdoor seating, and literally hear ten to fifteen different languages being spoken in just one block.

You will certainly hear English, Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, Italian, German, Chinese, Russian, and Japanese, and quite possibly a few more languages.

Miami is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Everglades National Park, and has virtually no land left for expansion or new construction. If a developer wants to build something new, in virtually every case that have to purchase an old building and tear it down, before they can start on their project.

Miami is not only glitz and glamour either, it does have some of the worst slums in America, but most tourists never get to see them, thankfully. In the early 1960’s many Cubans began to flee their country, because it was turned into a communist state.

Cuba is only ninety miles away from Key West, and the measures some of these people undertook to get out of the country and get to America, is horrifying. In fact, 1,000’s upon 1,000’s of them died during their endeavor to gain their freedom.

Miami has a very large Cuban population now, and in certain parts of the city, you would think that you are in another country, because Spanish is the dominate language. Miami is also home to a whole host of other communities that have immigrated to the city, including Puerto Ricans, Brazilians, and Venezuelans to mention but a few.

Miami is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, especially during the winter months in North America. Hundreds of thousands of US citizens from the East Coast come each year, as do a very large number of Canadian citizens.

Miami’s tourists do not only come from North America though, but also from South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Even though the city is almost literally half way around the world from Asia, many Asian citizens also make the journey just to get a chance to appreciate this irreplaceable destination.

Virtually anything that is legal, and many things that are not legal, can be found or done in Miami. Its outdoor attractions are some of the best in the world, and its nightlife really has to be experienced once in a person’s life.

It does not matter if you are the type of person that will spend $2,000 a night on a hotel room, and $200 on a meal, or if you only want to spend $50 for a hotel, and $5 for lunch, it is all possible in Miami.

The tourist industry is the cities cash cow, and all the people that work at the hotels, restaurants, and clubs are fully aware of that. Because of that, these employees are some of the most gracious and friendly customer service personnel found anywhere in the world.

If you have always wanted to visit Miami, but have never done so, there is not another time like the present to spend your next vacation there. There are many very good reasons it is so popular, and once you spend a little time there, you will come to understand exactly why it is such a beloved region of the country.
